Manufacturing some of the world’s most complex precision components demands confidence in every aspect of the machining process.
During a recent visit to Italy, Tony Gunn of The Worldwide Machinist and QualiChem representatives sat down with the team at Gamba, a precision manufacturing company founded in 1935, to learn how a change in metalworking fluid helped solve one of their biggest machining challenges.
The project delivered measurable improvements in tool life, process stability, operating costs, machine cleanliness, and operator comfort.
Nearly 100 Years of Precision Manufacturing
With more than 11,000 square meters of manufacturing space, Gamba has built its reputation by producing highly complex components where precision is non-negotiable.
Many of the parts manufactured at Gamba require approximately six hours of machining time on a single machine. Each finished component includes more than 300 critical dimensions that must be inspected and verified.
“When only one tool breaks,” explained Paolo from Gamba, “you have to scrap the part.”
For components with this level of complexity, every unexpected tool change introduces risk and increases downtime. Every broken tool can mean lost production time, increased costs, and scrapped workpieces.
The Challenge: Tool Wear on Difficult Materials
Gamba began evaluating QualiChem’s Q-COOL 355DG for machining on 316 stainless steel, a material well known for generating heat, accelerating tool wear, and creating machining challenges.
Tooling costs for these particular components represented more than 15% of the manufacturing cost, which is significantly higher than the company’s typical average of around 6%.
Finding a way to extend tool life without sacrificing quality quickly became a priority.
The Results: More Than 50% Longer Tool Life
After several months of testing the QualiChem cutting fluid, the improvements became difficult to ignore.
According to Gamba, QualiChem’s coolant increased cutting tool life by more than 50%.
Longer tool life meant far more than simply purchasing fewer cutting tools.
It reduced interruptions during lengthy machining cycles, minimized the risk of catastrophic tool failures, and increased confidence that complex parts could be completed without unexpected issues.
For operators, that translated into something even more valuable: peace of mind.
Instead of constantly listening for signs of tool failure during long machining cycles, machine setters could spend less time worrying and more time focusing on production.
Lower Operating Costs Beyond Tool Life
The savings didn’t stop with tooling.
Gamba also found that QualiChem’s coolant required a lower concentration than the competitive fluid previously in use.
Because the QualiChem coolant remained stable for significantly longer, the company no longer needed to replace the fluid every month.
That change reduced:
- Coolant consumption
- Disposal frequency
- Waste handling costs
- Downtime associated with coolant replacement
A Cleaner Machine Is a Better Machine
One of the most appreciated improvements came from the condition of the machines themselves.
Operators reported cleaner equipment with less residue and virtually no foam during machining.
Foaming can interfere with production by reducing coolant effectiveness and making it more difficult to monitor machining operations.
By eliminating those issues, Gamba found daily operations became smoother and machine maintenance became easier.
As Paolo explained, “Our team of machine setters are really satisfied.”
Creating a Better Working Environment
Manufacturing performance is important, but so are the people running the machines.
During the interview, Tony pointed out two concerns often raised by younger people considering careers in manufacturing: unpleasant odors and skin irritation.
At Gamba, neither was an issue.
Paolo explained that QualiChem’s coolant operates at approximately pH 7, compared to nearly pH 10 for the fluid previously used.
The new coolant also eliminated the need for several additives previously required, creating a cleaner, more operator-friendly working environment.
The benefits included:
- Minimal odor
- Reduced skin irritation
- Cleaner sump conditions
- Improved operator comfort
As Paolo put it, “A better oil in terms of health is better.”
Partnership Built on Performance
Every machine shop faces unique challenges.
By selecting a coolant designed for demanding machining applications, Gamba improved productivity, reduced operating costs, and enhanced the working environment for its operators.
The experience demonstrates that a metalworking fluid is more than a consumable. It is an essential part of the machining process. When the right coolant supports tool life, machinecleanliness, operator health, and overall production efficiency, it becomes an investment rather than an expense.
For Gamba, that investment is proving its value with every part produced.
